Eugene Carlisle Miller, Jr.
85, of Indianapolis, was welcomed into Heaven on Saturday, June 14, 2014. Gene was a native of Indianapolis and attended Park School. Following his graduation from Wesleyan University in Connecticut he received a JD from Harvard Law School. While in law school he dated the love of his life, Florence Jameson, whom he married upon graduation. She preceded him in death last July. They would have celebrated their 61st anniversary on June 6th of this year. Directly following his wedding, he enlisted in the US Army JAG Corps. Upon receiving honorable discharge and the medal of merit as a captain, he joined the Indianapolis firm Barnes Hickam Pantzer & Boyd, later to become Barnes & Thornburg. After 26 years in that partnership he left to form Hendrickson Travis Pantzer & Miller where he continued his law practice another 10 years. While practicing law he was an active member and president of the Bar Association of the Seventh Federal Circuit and was an active member of the American, Indiana State and Indianapolis Bar Associations and the Lawyers Club of Indianapolis.
Among his many volunteer activities, he served tirelessly as a member and chair of the boards of Happy Hollow Children's camp and the Christamore House. He was instrumental in founding and serving on the board of the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes, and served on the Vestry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he and Flo were members their entire married lives. He and Flo were loyal supporters of the Leelanau Conservancy, in Leland, Michigan and members of the summer congregation at St. Peter's Chapel there. He most enjoyed spending time with his family, which would gather for summers in Leland. He and Flo had many dear friends in the Leland Yacht Club and Country Club.
He was passionate about sailing, competing in 14 Chicago-Mackinac races as captain of his yacht the Leading Lady with his two sons and one son in law, winning his class twice and also garnering a second and third place finish. Flo and Gene traveled the far reaches of the globe, from the Great Wall to Mongolia, Siberia to Antarctica, Moscow to Vladivostok, New Zealand to the Great Barrier Reef, India to Jordan, the British Isles to Borneo, and Africa to Chili.
Gene was preceded in death by Flo, and his brother John Frenzel Miller. He is survived by his four children, Eugene C. Miller, III (wife Peggy and Annie), Mary Booth Stanley (husband John and Ian, Caitlin, Alec), Peter Miller (wife Lisa and Katherine, Christy), and Sarah Miller Carter (husband John and Molly, Ben, Maggie). The family would like to recognize with gratitude the loving care provided over the final years of Gene's life by his grandson Ian Stanley and caregiver Charles Isgrigg.
A memorial service will take place at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception celebration to follow at Woodstock Club from 12:30 to 2:30 (buffet luncheon). Memorial contributions in honor of Gene may be made to the Miller Summer Mission for Children Fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation or the Leelanau Conservancy. Arrangements were entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan – Broad Ripple. Online condolences or to view Gene's video tribute may be done by visiting www.flannerbuchanan.com.
