Eugene Frederick Borneman

August 3, 1918 — August 3, 2016

Eugene Frederick Borneman was born August 3, 1918. On his 98th birthday, surrounded by his loving family, he went home to Heaven. He had lived in Logansport for several years. Gene was born in Indianapolis. He was a graduate of Arsenal Tech. He was a decorated WW ll veteran. After the war, he married the love of his life, Mary Jane Tracy, and went to work at Eli Lilly. He was hired to sweep floors and clean animal cages. But with his tireless work ethic and brilliant mind, he retired as a pharmaceutical engineer. Gene loved serving as a mentor to college interns, always presenting them with a copy of his favorite poem, Longfellow’s “A Psalm of Life.” He was a self taught taxidermist and watchmaker. He was an avid fisherman. He was a man of strong faith in Christ, and he led by example. While his battlefield courage, medical research advances, and workplace diligence are truly admirable, Gene showed his greatest heroism in the way he cared for his wife as she died from Alzheimer’s. He is now reunited with his “girl” and is dancing with her on the streets of gold. He is survived by his children Robert (Gina) Borneman and Kathy (Paul) Hillis; grandchildren, Amy (Darrell) Couch, Bryan (Susan) Hillis, Tracy Gentry, Sarah Sayers, Jack Borneman, and Molly (O’ Landria) Borneman; eleven great-grandchildren and several cherished nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Monday, August 8, 2016 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan-Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite). Services will be Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the Conner Suite. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. www.flannerbuchanan.com
