Jay Strauch

With hearts full of love, we celebrate the life of Jay Strauch who left this world on July 6th.

Jay grew up in Walton, IN with generations of family and lifelong friendships. He graduated from Lewis Cass High School in 1972 and proudly served as the Class President. Jay received an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy and graduated with the cadet class of 1976.

After completing initial pilot training, Jay was selected for training as a fighter pilot. He then served in the United States Air Force flying the A-7 in Arizona and Louisiana. Jay began a 35-year career with American Airlines following his military service, earning the respect of fellow crew members flying all aircrafts in the AA fleet. He retired as an International Captain flying the B-787 Dreamliner in 2019.

Jay was an avid golfer and spent much of his leisure time on the links with family and good friends playing the game he loved. He was a three-time Club Champion at Woodland Country Club and a Senior Club Champion at Bridgewater Country Club in Carmel, IN.

While Jay’s professional accomplishments were extraordinary, his greatest pride was the love and commitment he showed his family. Jay and Laura, his wife of 41 years, settled in Carmel, IN to raise their three daughters. Jay is survived by his wife and all his children: Sherree Schraeder (Preston), Jennie Garrison (Mark), Julie Horn (Jonathan). Together they have 5 grandchildren and a granddaughter arriving in November.

Jay was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a steadfast source of strength, guidance, and support to his family. Those who knew Jay will remember his strong character, quiet confidence, and courage. He had an unwavering determination to succeed at all he did. He was the consummate fighter pilot who possessed “The Right Stuff.” He will always be remembered with love and affection.

A visitation for family and friends to gather will be held on from 4pm-8pm on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Flanner Buchanan Hamilton Memorial Park - Prairie Waters (4180 Westfield Rd. Westfield, IN 46062). A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30am on Friday, July 17, 2026, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church (100 W. 86th St. Indianapolis, IN 46260). Burial and graveside service will take place directly following at Carmel Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jay's honor may be made to Wounded Warrior Project.
