Era Buchanan was married to Frank B. Buchanan 42 years. She has 3 Children, 8 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren and 7 Great Great Grandchildren.
Born 7-18-11 in Westmoreland, TN.
Old Grandma as we call her, was the 5th of seven children. Mama and Papa Creasy lived on a 165 acre farm in rural TN. The farm was given to our family because Papa's Great Grandfather was commissioned in the Confederate Army and this was payment for his service to the South.
Papa raised corn, 2 types of tobacco and strawberries along with raising cattle, hogs and chickens. Life was hard but Old Grandma always spoke of it as fulfilling and happy. The farm house where she grew up was small with only 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room and living room which also served as her parents' bedroom. There was no indoor plumbing, only a 3 hole outhouse and no electricity until the 1940's or 50's. Mama and Papa Creasy always had a huge garden until their death in the early 1960's. They raised and canned all their own vegetables. They never owned a car. Old Grandma's heritage is unknown as her father's great grandfather was an orphan that was placed on a boat and raised by a family with the last name Creasy. He was too young to remember where he had come from or who his parents were. She told us stories of working in the field cutting and hanging tobacco to dry. She says she cut tobacco until her hands turned brown and swelled up then she became sick. She had responsibilities to help with the younger children, gather eggs from the hen house and to work in the fields. Old Grandma attended school in a 2 room school house until the eight grade. She never finished school as she stayed home to help on the farm and with a sister who was ill so that her younger brother and sister could go to school.
She came to Indianapolis to see her sister and ended up marrying her husband Frank. He passed away in 1976. She worked by taking care of all her grandchildren and great great grandchildren for many years. She lived independently in her own home until age 95.
