Emma Lou (Cavanaugh) Smith 89 of Indianapolis passed away January 7, 2011. Emma Lou was born on November 30, 1921 to George and Leone Cavanaugh in Washington, IN where she spent her childhood. She attended St. Mary’s College and graduated from IU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. After college Emma Lou was a homemaker for 24 years where she took care of and loved her family. Later in life, she became a Social Worker for Marion County and advanced to the State Welfare Department as Developmental Director for Child Welfare. In 1987 she was made a Sagamore of the Wabash for her humanity in living, her loyalty in friendship, her wisdom in council and her inspirational leadership to the State of Indiana. Emma Lou retired from the State in 1989. Following her retirement she enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends and family and giving to her favorite charities. She was always giving advice which was generated by love and concern for her loved ones. Emma Lou was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church for over 35 years. She will be greatly missed by her children, Pam (Tom) Eisele, Linda Proctor, Silas Johnson and Suzanne (Rich) Bellville; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Smith, Jr. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 13, at Our of Lady Peace Cemetery Chapel, where friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass.
