Elva Porter Garrison

Elva Porter Garrison, age 97, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother died at Brighton Gardens in Dunwoody, Georgia, on March 10, 2019. Mrs. Garrison was born January 8, 1922, in Robertson County, Tennessee to Paschal Porter and Ethel Mathias. She was the second oldest of six surviving children. She grew up during the Great Depression of the 1930s in north-central Tennessee and graduated from Portland, Tennessee High School in 1939. She married, Hoy Ewell Garrison, her husband… of 65 years in July of 1939. They had three children.

During WWII she made uniforms for the US Army. After the war, she and her husband opened a retail business in Guthrie, Kentucky. She and the family moved to Indiana in the early 1950s where she lived until 2011. She worked for Indiana Bell Telephone Company as a senior accounting clerk for many years until her retirement in 1984. She was a life-time member of Emerson Avenue Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she was very active as a teacher, mentor, secretary, and board member. In 2011 she moved to Dunwoody, Georgia to live with her youngest daughter.

Mrs. Garrison is survived by a sister, Irene Soliday of Cleveland, Ohio, a brother, James Porter of Indianapolis, Indiana, her children: Wayne Garrison of Big Canoe, Georgia; Charlotte Rogish (Ron) of Novelty, Ohio; Sondra Sparks (Terry) of Dunwoody, Georgia; grandchildren Matthew Rogish, Tonya Moore, Rachel Wilder, and Stephanie Donlan; and twelve great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019 from 1:30-2:30pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East with funeral services immediately following.  Entombment will take place in Washington Park East Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Clarkston Bible Institute: https://clarkstonbibleinstitute.com/your-support.
