Elsya Coleman-Elbert

August 12, 1946 — June 1, 2014

Elsya Lea Coleman-Elbert, 67, of Indianapolis, passed away June 1, 2014. She was born August 12, 1946, in Anna, IL, the daughter of Alfred Ray and Lucille Amelia (Boyd) Turkington. She was previously married to Joseph Montgomery and James Lee Coleman. She most recently married Samuel Elbert on July 4, 1997. Lea graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois and became a registered dietitian. After a successful internship, she was hired at Methodist Hospital. Shortly thereafter, she was recruited by Marquette Manor Retirement Center as the Food Service Director, to develop and launch their food service program. Because of Lea's success and reputation for delicious and nutritious meals as well as creating a fine dining experience, she was requited to the Summer Trace Retirement Center to launch their food service program as well. Marquette Manor, as not to be outdone, quickly courted Lea until she agreed to return. This is where Lea retired after 25 years. Lea grew up in a family of entrepreneurs. Even in the midst of a successful corporate career, she fulfilled her dream to become a business owner by opening "Perfect Pastries" bakery. Here you could find a creative variety of the highest quality pastries at an affordable price. She was a member of the American Dietetic Association and was an avid supporter of Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and collecting cook books. Lea is survived by her husband, Samuel Elbert; children, Anthony Montgomery and Kimberly Anne Coleman (Rev. Kimberly Banks-Brown); six grandchildren, Matthew Montgomery, Michael Montgomery, Anthony Hill, Jr., Andrew Joseph Hill, Max Montgomery, Mark Montgomery; nieces, Lisa File and Vickie Parks; nephews, William Schaefer, Gerald Parks, Dwayne Parks, Jay Coleman; good friend Mary Courtney Sauvain and best friend, Bobbie Thurman. She was preceded in passing by her first husband, James Lee Coleman; sister, Sharon Schaefer; brother, Ray Turkington, Jr.; niece, Christie Schaefer; and an aunt, Elsie Mae Cox. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Flanner and Buchanan – Broad Ripple, 1305 East Broad Ripple. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
