Elnora J. Burton, long time resident of Carmel, Indiana, died Sunday, 15 Jan 2023 at Bickford Senior Living in Greenwood. Elnora was born December 5, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, to Charles and Hazel Turner. She married Richard (Dick) Burton on July 27, 1951, and loved every minute of their 60+ years together.
She is survived by her children Mark (Debbie) Burton and Carol Robley; grandchildren Eric, Angie, Brad, Tracy, Kristi, and Michael; 13 great grandchildren; and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Dick, in 2011; and her beloved granddaughter Jennifer, in 2020.
Ellie graduated from Plainfield High School and Indiana University, and was proud to be the wife of a United States Marine. She was employed by the Indianapolis Star, Eli Lilly and Company, and the Carmel-Clay School System. She was blessed to enjoy being a substitute teacher and a Secretary there, and actually substitute taught in her children’s classrooms a few times, much to their amusement and even chagrin. Ellie was a prodigious reader, and proudly served on the Carmel Library Board for several years during Library’s extensive growth in the 1980’s. (she would, in fact, be proud that the word “prodigious” would be used in her obituary) She was a woman of faith and was a 60+ year member of Orchard Park Presbyterian Church; she was also an ordained Elder in the Church. She also served as a Sunday School Superintendent there with her husband, and led several Bible studies. As she said many times, when she was at church at Orchard Park, she felt like she was “at home”.
Being married to Dick Burton meant Ellie was an avid sports fan, and she even got to enjoy her beloved Cubs (finally) win a World Series in 2016, the same year her great-grandson Turner Burton was born…bearing both of her favorite last names. Dick and Ellie enjoyed family, friends, and traveling throughout their retirement, and leave behind a legacy of devotion, faith in God, and love for their family and friends to remember fondly.
Ellie’s family would like to express a special thanks to the staff of Bickford Senior Living in Greenwood, and Affinity Care Hospice for their care, compassion, and loving-kindness to Ellie these last years.
A time to celebrate Ellie’s life will commence with visitation at 10:00 AM on Monday, 30 January 2023, at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, 1605 East 106th Street in Indianapolis. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM at the church.
