Elmo T. Crabtree

August 26, 1934 — March 10, 2026

Indianapolis

Elmo Thomas Crabtree, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose determination, humor, and selfless heart left a mark on everyone he met, passed on March 10, 2026, at the age of 91. Elmo had long enjoyed an independent, active life - driving himself each day to McDonald’s to visit with friends and making his own trips to the grocery store. In a heartbreaking turn, he collapsed at home and was never able to return to enjoy the daily routines he cherished so much.

Born and raised in rural Tennessee, Elmo learned early the value of having a warm house and enough food. Those lessons guided him through life and became the foundation of his career as the proud owner of Crabtree Heating & Air Conditioning. A true craftsman, Elmo could fix anything – if he didn’t already know how, he’d figure it out. Elmo was always there to help his grown children with household repairs and improvements, never expecting anything in return. He also often made repairs for people who couldn’t afford his services and even generously fixed other things while on service calls.

One homeowner once shared a story in the local paper after Elmo made an emergency service call in the middle of a cold winter night. When asked how much they owed, Elmo simply said, “just a couple dollars.” The homeowner wrote, “I don’t know how he knew I didn’t have much money.” That act of kindness reflected who he was – someone who never forgot what it was like to grow up with limited means. Perhaps there is something fitting about a man who knew what it meant to endure the cold winters of rural Tennessee dedicating his life to ensuring others had a warm house.

Elmo also had an incredible sense of humor and a special gift for making people feel comfortable. He loved to talk to people – whether face-to-face or through his CB radio, where conversations turned strangers into friends as he repeated jokes he had heard on Hee Haw. Animals had a natural affection for him, too, always drawn to his gentle nature – this includes squirrels who came to his door for cookies. Elmo was also an excellent cook who made the best breakfasts. He loved to watch wrestling, go fishing, and spend time in the garden. Friends, neighbors and family rarely left his home without a bag of freshly picked tomatoes in hand.

Above all, Elmo’s greatest joy was his family. His late wife, Betty Lou Crabtree, was the love of his life, and his devotion to her was evident in everything he did, including breaking her out of a nursing home so he could care for her himself.

Elmo is survived by his son Michael (Zora) and daughters Deana (Chris), Katrina, and Kristina. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and a beloved great-grandfather to three great-grandchildren. He is also remembered fondly by extended family and many dear friends and customers who became like family over the years.

Elmo’s life was defined not by wealth or possessions, but by his gentle and generous nature. Elmo will be remembered as the man who could fix anything, helped everyone, and cared deeply. His presence – and pancakes – will be missed beyond measure.

A visitation will be held in Elmo's honor 12-2pm Tuesday March 17, 2026, with a service to follow at 2pm, all to take place at Flanner Buchanan-Washington Park East. He will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery.
