Elmer P Hulick

January 26, 1925 — August 17, 2013

Elmer Pollock Hulick, long time resident of Beaver, PA. passed away from complications of advanced prostate cancer on August 17 at the age of 88. He had lived at the Robin Run retirement village in Indianapolis the past 3 ½ years. Born in Washington, PA on January 26, 1925, Elmer was the youngest of 5 children. He graduated from high school and enlisted in the US Navy, serving during WWII in the South Pacific on the fleet admiral's communications ship, USS Rocky Mount as a Radioman Third Class. After the war, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth (Betty) Folkens on August 9, 1947. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education from Washington Jefferson College and his Masters of English from the University of Pittsburgh, taught english and history for 35 years starting in Midland for five years (where he also coached the high school baseball team) and then in Beaver Jr and Sr High Schools, retiring in 1983. He cared about all of his students and positively impacted so many of their lives. As adults, many former students would come up to him and say something like "I thought you were really strict when I was in school, but now I understand and I wish my kids had a teacher like you." That was all he needed to hear and he was always so proud of them. Not afraid of hard work, at night, during the summers and then after retirement, Elmer held many supplemental jobs including administrating the night school program at Penn State University/Beaver Campus, County Auditor, janitor at the Brighton Township Municipal Building, Election Judge, night-time security guard at Crucible Steel and financial secretary of First Presbyterian Church in Beaver, just to name a few. He was a life-long coin and stamp collector and an avid Pittsburgh Pirates AND Pittsburgh Steelers fan!!! In the summers & falls, he could be found watching a Pirates game while listening in on his radio. He even had a baseball cap with a transistor radio in it so he could listen to the games while mowing the lawn or working his huge vegetable garden! Elmer was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Betty; his parents and 4 siblings. He is survived by his children, Claudia Bursch of Alexandria, MN; John Hulick (Donna) of Ludington, MI and Lisa Stebbins (Chris) of Indianapolis; 7 grandchildren (Joanna, Lara, Tracey, Tim, Deborah, Lucas and Katia) and 6 great grandchildren (Austin, Levi, Brock, Makenna, Skyla and George). They were the joys of his life! You are invited to go to the Guest Book page to pass along your personal message or tell a story. Sincerely, -Your friends at Flanner and Buchanan
