Elizabeth E. “Betty” Nicholson passed away in her sleep on June 2 in her beloved Carmel, Indiana. Without a doubt, Betty was Carmel’s greatest ambassador having moved there with her husband, John, when Carmel was primarily tall trees and dirt roads. She stayed in the house they built together in the neighborhood they loved until well past her 90th birthday.
A little background:
On June 28, 1927 in Dayton, Ohio Ernest Zeller Elleman and Jane Davis Elleman celebrated the birth of their third child, Elizabeth Ann Elleman “Betty”. On the very same day Betty was introduced to her two siblings, James Davis Elleman and Nancy Jane Elleman (Nancy E. Coith). All three were raised in Richmond, Indiana where Betty went on to graduate from Earlham College before marrying the man of her dreams, John Timothy Nicholson. Betty and John ventured west to Indianapolis then Carmel where Betty was an enthusiastic travel agent with World Travel Service for 40 years. One of the highlights of her career was her birthday present to her mother a trip around the world together. After retiring in 1993 Betty divided her time between St. Vincent Hospital as a volunteer and Jazzercise as a participant. She walked her Northwood neighborhood daily bringing joy to all she met and their dogs too.
Betty LOVED dogs and dolphins. At this very moment Betty is likely snuggling with her favorite dog, Nick, letting him know how much fun it was to swim with the dolphins while in Florida.
In that spirit, Betty’s many devoted nephews and nieces encourage you to find the gifts that make each of us special, to explore the mystery and extraordinary beauty of the human heart. We ask instead of sending flowers please do an unexpected act of kindness for someone and their dog too!
A family graveside service will be held on June 16 at the Earlham Cemetery in Richmond, Indiana.
