Edwin R. White

Edwin Ray White, age 94, passed away on July 27. Ed was born on May 26, 1922, in Petersburg,IN. He was the third of 11 childrenraised by Luther and Georgia (Naney) White. After graduating from Petersburg High School in 1940, Ed enrolled atIndiana Central College and married Mary C. (Sinclair) White in 1942. His beloved Mary died in 2010 after 67 yearstogether.

In 1943, Ed was drafted into the US Army where he served asa radio operator in the 298th Infantry Regiment in Hawaii. He finished his Army service at Fort Knox,KY, and was honorably discharged in 1946.

Ed returned to college and completed his education degree atButler University in 1949. That sameyear he began working at Pike High School in Indianapolis, where he taughtEnglish and served as an assistant coach. He completed his Master’s Degree in School Administration at ButlerUniversity in 1953.

From 1957 to 1967 Ed served as principal at Pike HighSchool. In 1967 Ed became the AssistantSuperintendent of Decatur Township Schools in Indianapolis. Several years later, he assumed theSuperintendent’s position and continued serving until his retirement in1983.

Ed was an avid golfer until age 88. He enjoyed reading and following theIndianapolis Colts. Living in HoosierVillage for the past eight years, Ed liked helping at chapel services andattending several wellness programs, including his favorite swim class. Ed made many good friends among the residentsand staff at Hoosier Village.

Survivors include his four children, Dennis (Marilyn) White,Stephen (Sharon) White, Dale (Robin) White and Anita (Charlie) Bechtel; 7grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Miriam Wagoner andMarilyn Bonavita. His brothers Marvin,Maurice, Bill, Dick, Bob, Jim, Don and Ron predecease Ed.

The family would like to express its gratitude to the staffat Hoosier Village for the loving care extended to their father.
