Edward 'Ted' C. Harling

Edward ("Ted") C. Harling 92, of Indianapolis, passed away March 14, 2015. He was born on August 8, 1922 in Gravesend, Kent, England, to William Edward Harling and Dorothy Annie (Spencer) Harling. He is survived by his wife Miriam whom he married June 30, 1944, two daughters Janis (Stephen) Lewman of Fountaintown and Myra Dworski of Indianapolis,two granddaughters (Andrea Gorman and Heather Pierce), one great-granddaughter (Tiffany Harris), and one great-great-grandson (Brody Harris). He served in the British Royal Navy before immigrating to the USA in December 1953 with his wife and two daughters. Ted was a Chief Petty Officer in the British Royal Navy and worked as a mechanical engineer, project manager and designer for several heating and ventilating companies in the United States until his retirement. He was a life member of ASHRAE. He became a United States citizen September 9, 2003. He was a founding member and concertmaster of the Indianapolis Oasis Symphony Orchestra. He performed with the Scottish Rite Orchestra, and the Indianapolis Athenaeum Orchestra. He was a member of Toastmasters. He participated in numerous theatrical performances - as actor, director, and design / construction of theatrical sets. He was given a five-star Best Director Award from Encore Association for his direction of "Opera Comique" at Epilogue Players. For many years, he and his wife were competitive ballroom dancers and often found themselves among the finalists in contests. He also enjoyed sketching, watercolor and oil painting, woodworking and growing flowers. A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015, from 1-2pm at Flanner and Buchanan - Washington Park East, with a memorial service beginning at 2pm.
