Dr. Edward L. Grinnan, 89, of Carmel, Indiana, was called home to our Lord on June 25, 2012, after a determined battle with heart disease. Ed is predeceased by his Wife, Agnes Grinnan, and is survived by his daughter, Gloria Mitchell, her husband, Jeff and his precious granddaughter Madison. He is also survived by his nieces Mary Lou Dillon and Carol A. Ambacher, and his nephews, Joseph E. Grinnan, Edward Grinnan and Donald F. Lowe, and their families.
Ed was born on October 14, 1922 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Mary Daily and Edward Joseph Grinnan. Ed served his country as a member of the US Navy, and completed his undergraduate degree at Pennsylvania Military College. He attended graduate school at the University of Delaware and earned a Master's Degree and a PhD in Biochemistry. (MS '50, PhD '52)
In 1952, Edward accepted a position as a research biochemist with Eli Lilly & Co., in Indianapolis, where he remained until his retirement in December of 1985. Ed was an avid sailor, and he and his wife Agnes enjoyed winters in their second home in Hilton Head South Carolina, where Ed was able to spend time on the water as a member of the Auxiliary Coast Guard.
He was very active in the community following retirement, and he assisted with local school and church science fairs and tutored students in the local area in science and math, his passions. He was a member of the Society of Retired Executives (ESC) and active in the Eli Lilly retirement community.
The family would like to thank residents and staff at the Forum at the Crossing for making Ed a part of their family, the staff of the Care Group for their healing hands, and the staff at St. Vincent Hospital 86th Street for their compassionate hands.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 18th, 2012, at 10:30 AM at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 10655 Haverstick Road, Carmel, with calling from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. Private entombment will be at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery. A celebration of Ed's life will also be held on Saturday, August 18 from 1-4 PM at Flanner and Buchanan- Carmel, 325 E. Carmel Drive, Carmel.
