Edra S. Roper

Edra Stoelting Roper 92, Indianapolis, passed away of natural causes at her home on August 30th. She was born September 10th, 1920 in Oaktown, IN to the late Philip and Agnes Stoelting. She was a graduate of Ball State Teachers College where she met her sweetheart Ralph Roper. They were married on September 9th, 1942 and their love endured for nearly 70 years. She taught high school English, music and business in McGuffey, OH and in Bicknell, IN while her husband served in the US Navy during World War II. Edra and Ralph and their two sons settled in Indianapolis in 1950. She was devoted to her family and community. She was active in various school programs including active participation in the PTA, playing piano accompaniments for high school musicians, and serving as a Cub Scout den mother. She volunteered for many service organizations including the Red Cross, the United Way, the Armed Forces Entrance Examination Station (AFEES), the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the Indianapolis Symphony Women's Society. She had diverse interests, many friends and enjoyed membership in organizations including the Indianapolis Business and Professional Women's Society, the Aristo Club and the Indiana Museum of Arts Women's Study Group. She was a faithful member of the Meridian Street United Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. Edra is survived by her son Philip A. Roper, MD and wife Lisa Rae of Missoula, MT; son Ralph E. Roper, Jr., PhD and wife Sue Ann of Carmel, IN; grandchildren Michael Roper and Erin (husband Mark) Hopper of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren Jeffery Roper and Sara Roper of Indianapolis, IN; and great-grandchildren Riley and Grant Hopper. She was preceded in death by her husband and her two sisters, Norvelle Westrup of Greensburg, IN and Vera Summers of Vincennes, IN. Visitation will be held on Wednesday morning, September 11th at the Meridian Street United Methodist Church, 5500 N. Meridian Street beginning at 10:00 am followed by a funeral service in the chapel beginning at 11:00 am. An internment ceremony will be held at approximately 1:00 pm at the Washington Park North Cemetery. You are invited to go to the Guest Book page to pass along your personal message or tell a story.
