Edith Word

July 25, 1923 — October 25, 2025

Fishers

It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family of Edith Word announces her peaceful passing on October 25,2025 at the age of 102 years.

She will be dearly missed by her family as well as her many friends. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of Hamilton Trace Assisted Living for the care and compassionate support of Edith and her attending family during her recent illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Oscar. Her parents Ben and Nola, brothers: Jewell, Charles, Darrell, Dean and George Michael and sisters: Mary and Dorothy. Edith is survived by her sister Judy.

Edith was the proud mother of two children: Carolyn and Thomas (Sue). She adored her three grandchildren: Melissa (Erik) Wagner, Eric (Anna) Phillips, and Aaron (Michelle) Word. She was overjoyed to welcome and had many years to get to know her four great grandchildren: Miles, Mia and Jackson (Phillips) and Flora (Word). She truly embraced her role as grandmother and great-grandmother for two step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

Edith was 2 years old when her family moved to Indianapolis. She attended Manual High School. She met her husband Oscar in Indianapolis, and they married on November 8,1941 in Greenfield, IN. They resided in Indianapolis for most of their married lives. They enjoyed a wonderful life together for almost 63 years. Edith was a homemaker and excelled at the skill of making any place she resided in a warm and loving home; this was a desirable quality as she recently recalled that Oscar frequently came home to announce that they were moving and they had moved homes 13 times in their life together. This would include, in the early 1950’s, a home on the East side of Indianapolis that did not have indoor plumbing. Edith took it all in her stride. Oscar and Edith enjoyed traveling and shortly after Oscar’s retirement they traveled across the US, taking 3 months to see the sights. For many years they vacationed on Jekyll Island GA where Edith loved to walk the beach to find sharks teeth. She was an expert at this and amassed quite a collection of them. They resided for a few years in Florida and as always, she enjoyed her home and the many friends she acquired there.

A Visitation will be held between 12:00 and 2:00pm, on November 15th, at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center at Washington Park East: 10722 E Washington St. Indianapolis, IN 46229 with a graveside Prayer service between 2:00-3:00.
