He is survived by two daughters, Clelia Crimmins (Tom) and Denise Kaler (Dave), six grand children and twelve great grand children. Dugal is also survived by one sister, Minnie Smith, who lives in Brazil, South America.
Dugal's father, a self-supporting Canadian missionary went to Brazil in 1904 and labored for some 50 years in the jungle region of northern Brazil, traveling thousands of miles on horse-back, taking the gospel to the rainforest people of the area. He married a Brazilian, Ana Tavares Bastos, one of his first converts, and they had 13 children, 5 of which died young, victims of tropical diseases.
Dugal came to Canada in 1941 to further his education, and while he was in Canada, World War II broke out. Shortly after, the United States government asked him to come to Washington, to be the editor of the Portuguese magazine, O Observador Militar Interamericano (The Inter-American Military Observer), published for the Portuguese speaking armed forces fighting with the allies. After the war was over, Smith was offered a position at Eli Lilly and Company, where he worked for 30 years.
In Indianapolis, he met Pauline Elliott and they got married in 1949. His beloved wife of 54 years passed away in 2003.
Dugal was an ordained minister in Indianapolis and pastored 3 churches in Indiana and one in Michigan.
After retiring from Lilly in 1976, the Smiths started a missionary project of building churches for poor congregations in Northern Brazil, and also funded a grade school in the village where there was no school of any kind. Dugal wrote two books: Making Progress and Live a Happy Life. Both are now out of print.
Dugal and his wife Pauline enjoyed world traveling. They visited five continents and approximately forty individual countries. During their retirement, the Smiths spent summers at their Sweetwater Lake home in Brown County, Indiana, and winters at their residence in Sarasota, FL.
