Dring N. Crowell

Dring Needham Crowell 54, of Carmel passed away on June 30, 2012. He was born on May 25, 1958 in Albuquerque, NM to Norton Barr and Ruth Mary Crowell. He was valedictorian of his class at Normal Community High School, majored in chemistry at Illinois State University, and received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he met his future wife, Pamela L. Herzan. They were married in 1983. He was a biology professor at IUPUI and at Idaho State University. He led a molecular biology research program funded by the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and National Institutes of Health, and published over 50 manuscripts. He helped to establish the Forensic and Investigative Sciences program at IUPUI. In the classroom and laboratory, he taught more than a thousand students who became scientists, physicians, and teachers. He was a talented guitarist, composer, luthier, woodworker, writer, and cook, and he enjoyed the great outdoors. He was a member of the praise band at King of Glory Lutheran Church, and a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and other organizations. He is survived by his wife, Pam Crowell; son Andy Crowell (Stephanie); daughter Beth Crowell; beloved grandson Owen; brothers Larry (June), Steve (Grace), and Don Crowell (Becky); mother Ruth Mary Crowell; aunt Sally Needham; nephews Scott Crowell, Nathaniel Crowell, Hunter and Trapper Holden; nieces Lee Ann Pate (Jeff), Mary Lynn Carrasco (Art), Camille and Elise Crowell; father- and mother-in-law Gene and Sylvia Herzan; sisters-in-law Lori Holden (Greg), Sandy Herzan, Jackie Crowell, and Elisheva Levin. He was preceded in death by his father Norton Crowell, and grandparents Dring and Ruth Needham, and Norman and Grace Noll Crowell. Family and friends are invited to gather 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 15th at Flanner and Buchanan -Carmel. Funeral service at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 16, 2012 at King of Glory Lutheran Church, Carmel, followed by internment at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention or Habitat for Humanity.
