Dr. Jerry Buhler, a devoted family man, accomplished chemist, and dedicated community volunteer, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, kindness, and unwavering enthusiasm for life. He was born on May 10, 1945, in Lafayette, Indiana, to George and Betty Buhler.
Raised in Mobile, Alabama, Jerry attended W.P. Davidson High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically. He served as class president, was a member of the National Honor Society, and led as president of the Key Club. On the field, he shone as the football quarterback, a varsity basketball player, and a member of the baseball team.
Jerry pursued higher education with distinction, graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1967 with honors in chemistry. He went on to earn his PhD in organic chemistry from Purdue University in 1973. His professional career spanned 30 years at Eli Lilly, where he held various leadership roles, including positions in Engineering Tech Services, Quality Control, Diabetes Care and dry products manufacturing, and Information Technology Transfer Systems. He was instrumental in the transition of Lilly’s insulin business from animal extracted insulin to the new biosynthetic insulin that is used today, making Lilly the leader in helping millions of diabetics worldwide.
Upon retiring, Jerry channeled his energy into giving back to his community. He volunteered extensively with Habitat for Humanity, participated in mission trips to Guatemala through his church, and contributed his time to the Zionsville Restore.
Jerry's passions included golf and cheering for Purdue basketball. However, his greatest joys were the moments spent with his family, particularly watching his grandchildren excel in sports programs, performances, and academics.
He is survived by his loving wife, Diane; his two children, Kerrie Lynn Patton (Kevin) and Kyle Andrew Buhler (Cherie); his sister, Lynda Davis; his four cherished grandchildren, Haley Marie Buhler, Jacob Dean Buhler, Aidan James Patton, and Olivia Ragan Patton, and his 3 nephews.
Jerry's life was a testament to hard work, compassion, and family bonds. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
