Indianapolis

Dr. Barbara Jean Alston Mebane Robbins, a devoted educator, traveler, and beloved family member, passed away on December 17, 2024, in Indianapolis, IN, at the age of 73. Born on October 18, 1951, in the Bronx, NY, to Eva Mattie (Gill) Bryant and James Alston Jr., who preceded her in death, Barbara was lovingly raised by her mother and stepfather, Frank Bryant, who also preceded her in death.

Barbara is survived by her loving mother, Eva Mattie (Gill) Bryant, her devoted husband, Walden "Wade" Robbins, her sister Evagelita Thomas, her two treasured nieces Eva Michelle and Idonia, two cherished bonus daughters, and four adored bonus grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Courtney Camille Cox, in October 2021, who was the light of her life. Barbara and Courtney shared an enduring bond and a passion for travel and adventure.

Dr. Robbins was a dedicated scholar, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Winston-Salem State University, two Master’s degrees, and a Doctorate of Education (EdD) from Ball State University. She began her remarkable career in education as an English teacher at Anderson High School and concluded it as an administrator at the International Baccalaureate School in Indianapolis, IN. Her career was a testament to her unwavering commitment to education and her profound impact on countless students.

Barbara’s vibrant spirit extended beyond her career. She was a passionate traveler who explored the world with Courtney, spending extensive time in France and collecting spoons from her journeys. She was an avid reader, decorator, entertainer, and stylist whose creativity and elegance touched everyone around her. A proud member of the Alpha Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and a devoted member of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, Indianapolis Chapter, Barbara cultivated community and built lifelong relationships through her service and dedication.

Dr. Robbins was a faithful member of Witherspoon Presbyterian Church following many dedicated years of service alongside Dr. Landrum Shields at Covenant Community Church. At Witherspoon, Dr. Robbins supported the arts, participated in the Harp Tutorial Program, volunteered faithfully, and enjoyed Midweek Bible Study. Through her unwavering spirit of philanthropy, she believed in giving back, leaving a legacy, spreading love, and letting the Light of God shine through her. In every way, she embodied the words first spoken by Jesus in the Gospel of St. Matthew 5:16: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

She often lovingly teased Pastor Harrison-Jones on his creative and unconventional approach to Presbyterian doctrine and liturgy, after having heard him coin the phrase “Bapterian.” After delivering the eulogy for her beloved Courtney, she grew fond of his teaching style, comedic approach, commitment to congregational vitality, and unapologetic pride in African American History and Culture. She took great pride in her faith and in her Church Family.

Barbara’s legacy is one of love, intellect, and creativity. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
