It is with deep sorrow that we announce Albert Cedric Johnson M.D., age 89, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on February 6, 2026, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Cedric was born on September 27, 1936, and was raised in Marion, Indiana, to Albert Cedric Johnson, Sr. and Marcella Frances (Terhune) Johnson. He felt blessed to be raised there.
Cedric married his college sweetheart and love of his life, Marsha Lee Burelison on June 27, 1959, in Marion, Indiana. Their marriage of almost 67 years was marked by deep faith, love of family and devoted partnership. He is survived by his loving wife, Marsha (Burelison) Johnson.
Cedric is survived by their three children and 6 grandchildren: Marisa Johnson (Timothy) Burkhart and their children Miriam Burkhart Tudyk M.D., Hannah Burkhart R.R.T., and Sarah Burkhart. Stacy (Audrey) Johnson D.D.S. and their children Ethan Johnson and Bella (Conlan) Uptmor. Gregory Johnson D.D.S. and his son Matthew Johnson.
Cedric pursued his call to practice medicine with excellence and compassion. He attended Marion College (Indiana Wesleyan University) in Marion, Indiana, then continued his senior studies at Indiana University. He went on to graduate from I.U. School of Medicine in 1962. He started out with a one-year internship at Ball Hospital, then began his surgical residency at Methodist Hospital of Indianapolis, where he remained for his entire career of 38 years. Cedric was a General Surgeon holding his own private practice and taking trauma call every few nights during his time at Methodist. He became a member of the American College of Surgeons and enjoyed teaching surgery. He received the J.K. Berman award for surgery education more than once. After his retirement from private practice in 1998, he continued to staff the General Surgery Resident’s cases at Methodist and volunteered for several more years at Raphael Health Center.
A man of deep Christian faith, Cedric along with his wife, Marsha, were longtime members of Crooked Creek Baptist Church, then John Wesley Free Methodist Church. His faith shaped both his career and his service to others beyond the hospital walls. Cedric had a special passion for medical mission trips. His compassion for others in need led him to volunteer his surgical expertise to multiple medical clinics in Africa and Haiti, doing short term volunteer work. These experiences left a loving and lasting impression on all who shared them.
It is amazing to realize that he was even more involved in his family life. He did not miss his children’s or grandchildren’s activities. Cedric was a middle school Sunday school teacher and participated in Indian Guides and Princesses with his children. He and his wife actively supported Young Life and hosted gatherings when needed. He would attend his children’s and grandchildren’s concerts, lessons, solo and ensemble contests. Sometimes he had would only have one eye open as he spent many sleepless nights at the hospital; however, he was always there. He attended band camp with his children, working in the kitchen or doing whatever he was told needed to be done. Cedric and Marsha met with and enjoyed many other Pike parents and students in those activities, making lifelong friends along the way. His spirit was re-lit again when he started having grandchildren. He loved supporting them in many ways and attended all musical and sports activities.
He loved and supported his amazing wife and all his extended family. Since he was an only child, when he married one of six girls, he enjoyed having a large extended family. The six sons-in-law were all like brothers. He enjoyed every niece and nephew as well.
Cedric and Marsha hosted many friends and family over the years. Some were living at home with them for weeks or months, and some were living in their home for years. They had a great gift for hospitality.
Cedric will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and Papaw, faithful servant, and compassionate physician whose life reflected a quiet strength and a generous heart.
