Dr. Alan L. Hargrave, Ed.D.

Alan Lloyd Hargrave, age 68, formerly of Johnsonville, IL, left this world on June 7, 2025, after serving a rich and generous life. Alan was a higher education administrator who directed the operations of residence halls on various university campuses. He worked at Murray State University and the University of Southern Mississippi. He retired from Ball State University in 2021 after 35 years there as the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Housing and Residence Life. Besides overseeing housing and residence hall operations, he supervised the Departments of Public Safety, Parking, Student Rights and Community Standards, and Counseling and Health Services.

Alan earned his B.S. degree in Zoology and his M.S. degree in Student Personnel in Higher Education from Eastern Illinois University. He earned his Doctorate of Education in Adult and Community Education from Ball State University.

During his time at Ball State, he oversaw the building of four new residence halls and the major renovation of seven existing halls. He created programs that enhanced student learning opportunities and developed policies that demonstrated care, inclusion, and support for all students. His work at Ball State has left a lasting impression because of his vision, intentionality, and creativity.

Alan’s professional work was known nationally and internationally because of his leadership and exceptional service. He was elected president of his professional organization, the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International and was recently awarded the professional organization’s most distinctive honor.

Alan was a long term, active, and beloved member of Broadway United Methodist Church. It was there where he shared in fellowship and service. Known to be the best baker for pitch ins, his pies, cakes, and cookies were always the first devoured!

Alan was an owner of several award-winning Russell Terrier and Border Terrier show dogs. His dog, Dynamite, was the Multiple Best in Show Winner as well as the #1 Russell Terrier and a Top 5 Terrier 2024. Dynamite was a National Specialty Winner as well as a Best of Breed winner at Westminster Kennel Club. Alan recently met the requirements to become a judge of all breeds of Terriers.

In his retirement, he enjoyed creating quilts and giving them away to friends, family, and those in need of some support.

Alan is survived by his sister Kay (Ron) of Owensboro, KY; his brother Daryl (MaryKay) of Cisne, IL; nephews Tim and Lee, nieces JoAnn, Amanda, and Lindsey; and 13 great nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Alan will be held at Broadway United Methodist Church on Wednesday June 25, 2025. Funeral services will be held beginning at 2 o'clock, EDT, with visitation with the family from 10 until service time.

Private burial services will be held Saturday, June 28 at 2:30 P.M., CDT, in Johnsonville, Illinois.
