Dorothy Helen Spurlin, neé Schomaker, passed away at the age of 91 on July 9. One of five siblings, Helen was born in St. Louis, MO on December 3, 1933 before moving to Mattoon, IL where she lived until moving to Speedway, IN in 1962. She had an illustrious career as a dental assistant and as an office manager for the Pike Township trustee office.
Helen was a force of nature and a pillar of her family and community. A devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church for 63 years, and part of her Bible Study Fellowship for over 10 years. She loved her family dearly and was an active member of her community, filling her days with bowling, golf, euchre, bridge, hand and foot, bingo, IU basketball, and more. Helen also gave back whenever she could, volunteering at the IU hospital for 15 years and with the Tri Kappa Philanthropic Sorority’s Speedway chapter for over 50. She always had a kind word (or sassy remark) for anyone who needed it. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Maurice Richard Spurlin and siblings John Schomaker, Mary Authenreith, Theresa Putnam, and Jeanne Wolfe (previously Faller). She is survived by her children Brenda (Gary)Hessel and Brad (Rena) Spurlin, grandchildren Matthew, Allison, Ross, Brittany, Bethany, and Timothy, and 10 great-grandchildren. Words cannot express how much we miss her, but we take comfort knowing she is with her Savior in Heaven. Those who wish to pay their respects can come to St. Christopher Catholic Church on July 24. The visitation starts at 9:30 AM, with a memorial mass at 11:00 AM. A private graveside service was held on Tuesday July 15, 2025 at 10 am at West ridge Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Tri Kappa Philanthropic Sorority’s Speedway chapter.
