Morgantown, Indiana – Dorothy A. (Nohr) Slater, 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, love and prayers on July 19, 2025. Her love, kindness, faith, humor and sass will be deeply missed by not only her family, but everyone who knew her.
Dorothy was born on October 3, 1929, to parents Edward Francis & Susan (Chappell) Kennedy in Indianapolis, Indiana. During her formative years at St. Philip Neri grade school and St. Mary’s Academy, Dorothy developed strong, lifetime friendships and this group of women, who named themselves the JOA Club, gathered together regularly throughout their lives to commiserate, ruminate and ?? (we’ll apparently never fully know!). After graduation, she began her career at the Indianapolis Star as a secretary where she worked until marrying Richard (Dick) Nohr on January 26,1952. They both settled immediately into building their future family and Dorothy’s next career choice was that of mother, which proved to be the hardest and most rewarding job of all! Together they raised five children in love and faith, both in the St Lawrence Parish and ultimately the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish. Many years and five children later, Dorothy eventually returned to work as office manager for John H. Carmody, DDS where she worked until retiring in 1984. She and Dick then relocated to their second home in rural Shelbyville (their beloved Brandywine) where they remained together until his passing on July 22, 2005. She ultimately relocated to a family lakeside home in Brown County where several years later she met, fell in love and married her second husband, John Slater, on January 4, 2014. They spent their marriage enjoying their lakeside community, traveling, playing cards and watching their mutual families grow. Dorothy was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother as well as stepmother/grandmother. She and John were proud members of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Nashville IN for many years where she practiced faithfully and was a long-time member of the church choir, along with her daughter, Lisa.
When she had time to relax, it was usually with a crossword puzzle, Sudoku, or co-captaining John’s boat on Lake LaSalle. Dorothy was an avid reader and a regular at the local library. Also a first-rate card player, she enjoyed Bridge and was a shark at Euchre (she loved her loners). Throughout her adult life, Dorothy spent time garage “sailing,” was the family “clocksmith,” was known for her fear of flying, would swat your hand if you tried to steal her beloved sweets, especially chocolates,(watch it, John), her Sprites (“just delicious”), her occasional “drinkie drinks” and for her love of her four-legged friends. She passed this love of animals to her children and grandchildren who have carried on the tradition. Bird watching provided her such happiness so ensuring the birds were well fed was a weekly family responsibility. She was able to observe the birds (and geese) visit daily which always brought a smile to her face. Her true joy in life, however, was her family and watching them grow. She was kept abreast of all things family, both near and far, which warmed her heart (and ours) as we shared these old and new memories together.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy is preceded in death by husband Richard Nohr and daughter Kathryn Sumner.
She is survived by husband, John Slater, children Lisa K. Dorsey (Sven, deceased 2018), Gretchen M. McFarland, Richard E. Nohr (Laurette), and Barbara S. (Steady) Corwin; grandchildren Sara M. Knight (Chris), Amanda L. Schapker (Will), Melissa M. Green (Evan), Lauren K. Peters (Joe), Britta D. Dorsey, Shannon M. Steady Kauffman, Alan M. Steady (Kristin) and Richard M. Nohr (Megan); Great-grandchildren Nathan, Kaelyn, Jackson, Hudson, Kathryn, Elizabeth, Royce, Howard and Murphy, as well as the many, many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 28, 2025, from 1-3 pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229) with funeral services following at 3 pm. Burial will be private.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers and friends at Magnolia Springs at Bridgewater Carmel, St Elizabeth Seton Church for all the Masses and lay ministry visits there, along with Grace at Home and Enlight Hospice who provided such comfort, care, dignity, gentleness and compassion to both Dorothy and her family these past two years. Her journey home was made all the more safe because of them.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial donations to be made in Dorothy’s name to the Brown County Humane Society.
