Dorothy S. Shelby

Dorothy S. Shelby, 96, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2020 at Bethany Village Nursing Home.

She was born July 3, 1924; the daughter of the late Charlie and Elsie Burton in Columbia, Kentucky, and moved to Indianapolis as a young girl. There she met and married her late husband, Clayborne Stewart Shelby. Together, they reared three children: the late Charles S. Shelby (Elsie), Sandra S. Braden of Olathe, Kansas, and Phyllis J. McQueen (Edwin) of Louisville, Kentucky. Dorothy loved music and even during her late years she could be heard singing popular melodies from the 40’s and 50’s. Doing her part to support the WWII war effort, she was a “Rosie the Riveter,” building intercom speakers for naval battleships.

In addition to her two daughters, she is survived by two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held at a later date.
