Dorothy M. Maynard, 92, of Indianapolis passed away October 13, 2013. She was born and raised in New Knoxville, OH where she developed a strong work ethic working on her parents' farm, Schroer Leghorn Farm, & graduated from high school. Then attending Cosmetology school in Ft. Wayne, IN and becoming a beautician at Susanne Beauty Shop in Tipton, IN for several years.
She was an extraordinary woman, who in a time when relatively few women pursued higher education and even more rarely joined the military, went on to enlist and serve in the U.S. Navy (WAVES) during WWII and went through IBM's training program. After returning from war, she worked at International Harvester from 1946-1982. She was awarded a management job and was the first woman supervisor at International Harvester. Following her retirement from Navistar, she worked at Fepco. With her incredibly strong work ethic, knowledge of computers, "I know we can do it" attitude, and values she was instrumental in Fepco's success for many years.
Dorothy was an honorable and gracious, silent pioneer for women. She was passionate about and selflessly loved her family, friends, church, career, and country. She was a member of several organizations including the WAVES, DPMA, & Northminister Presbyterian Church
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Ed Maynard; parents, Leroy & Francis Schroer; and sister; Virginia. She is survived by one Godchild, Devon Parker Alsup and many friends.
Visitation will be from 11am -1pm on Saturday at Flanner and Buchanan Washington Park East, 10722 East Washington Street in Indianapolis. Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM with graveside service to follow. Please share condolences and memories at www.flannerbuchanan.com
