Dorothy G. Holmes turned 104 years old on December 30, 2013. A celebration of her birthday was held on that day at Lakeview Manor nursing home in Indianapolis where she had lived for the past 4 ½ years. She passed away in her sleep on January 2, 2014. Dorothy was born in Seymour, Indiana, Jackson County. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Emmert T. Myers and she had one brother, Albert C. "Bud" Myers, all of whom are deceased. She is the widow of John William Holmes whom she married on August 11, 1935 in Seymour. They had two sons, J. Steven Holmes of Indianapolis, Indiana and William A. Holmes of Colorado. Dorothy had seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and five great-great -grandchildren. John and Dorothy were members of the First Christian Church in Columbus, where Dorothy later taught in the Primary Department. She served as a Grey Lady at Camp Atterbury during World War II and was a member of Tri Kappa in both Seymour and Columbus for 70 years. Dorothy belonged to the Historical Society, the Victory Worker's Sunday School class at First Christian, and the Senior Center where she was a volunteer worker and organist for over 39 years. She was also a member of the Organaires Music Club for several years. Dorothy played the organ in various nursing homes around Columbus until she had to quit driving at age 92; she was the last member to still play at the Convalescent Rehabilitation Center and Four Seasons Retirement Center. She enjoyed all kinds of crafts, stitchery, ceramics, painting, bridge, reading, dancing, travel and playing the organ up to age 96. At the time of her death, Dorothy was a member of 7th and 8th United Christian Church in Indianapolis. Services for Mrs. Holmes will be held at Flanner and Buchanan – Speedway, 2950 N. High School Rd. Indianapolis, on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with calling 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Seymour, IN. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the Speedway United Methodist Child Care Ministry. Friends are invited to leave online condolences for the family at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
