Dorothy Jean (Loos) Phillips was born March 9, 1930 to Charles and Ethel Loos, in Madison, Indiana .She went to her final HOME on March 24, 2021. Dottie was raised on a farm near Ryker’s Ridge and had 4 older siblings, John, Gerald (Gus), Charles (Deb) and Betty that preceded her in death.
Dottie graduated from Central High School in Madison, Indiana. She moved to Indianapolis, Indiana at the age of 18 where she met her husband, Richard (Dick) Phillips. They were married November 23, 1950. They had 5 children and celebrated 46 years of marriage before Dick died October 19, 1996.
Dottie worked many years in insurance, processing claims for Ramey Mannen Insurance Agency which later became Rollins Burdick Hunter where she retired in 1989.
After attending a Billy Graham Crusade, Dottie affirmed her faith in Jesus as her Lord and Savior. She loved serving the Lord and did so in many ways including as a Deaconess at her church. She also volunteered at the Storehouse Food Pantry in Speedway with her friend Fred Hoerger. She loved her church, Speedway Christian Church, where she had many wonderful friends and was involved in many groups including the Eunice Circle and Spouses without Partners. Since the church was closed most of 2020 due to Covid19, she watched David Jeremiah on television with her son Rick.
Dottie was mentally sharp and an avid card player. She enjoyed playing euchre and gin rummy with Fred and family. She also taught her grandchildren the finer aspects of playing. Almost every morning she conquered the newspaper crossword puzzle. Watching the Indiana Pacers, IU basketball, and Hallmark, were favorites of hers.
Dottie’s greatest joys were spending time with her family. She was very thankful that she was able to talk to each child, each son- in-law, and each grandchild before she passed and considered this a Holy gift from the Lord.
Dottie leaves behind 4 of her 5 children and spouses: Richard (Rick) Phillips, Jody (Stan) Johnson, Cathy (John) Miller and Lynda (John) Schmutte. Her 5 grandchildren, Holly and Luke Johnson, Adam and Nick (Haley) Schmutte, and Grant (Myranda) Phillips. Dottie’s first great granddaughter, Odessa Adele Phillips, will be arriving in April. She will know of her great grandmother’s love for her and her grandma Amy Phillips who left us to go home to Jesus in July 2019.
Dottie’s celebration of life will be held at Flanner and Buchanan in Speedway, Indiana on April 7th, with viewing from 10:00am-12:00pm with service to follow. Dottie will be laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery alongside her husband Dick and their daughter Cindy Jo, who died November 2, 2002.
We want to thank the wonderful staff, especially the nurses and doctors at IU Methodist, on the CVCC unit that took special care of Dottie. Many expressed how she was the sweetest and kindest person they had met. Dottie had a smile that lit up a room, and she never knew a stranger. She leaves behind a loving example of how to live, face tough times, and trust in the Lord.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Speedway Christian Church, at 5110 W 14th Street, Speedway IN 46224. Dottie’s other charities included Noble Industries, Riley Hospital Cochlear Implant Unit and the American Cancer Society.
