Dorothy D. Melson

Dorothy D. Melson, 86, of Indianapolis, passed away, Friday morning August 24, 2012. Dorothy was born in Indianapolis daughter of Oscar and Lilly (Settles) McAlhaney. She had worked at Indianapolis Gas Company as a Clerk, but her true occupation was being a good mother and giving her life to her children. She gave so much of her time and money to her family that most of the time there was nothing left for her. She also spent her energy raising many foster children. She helped start the Head Start Program in Indianapolis. She loved to cook and always had wonderful holiday meals. She has left behind many family members and she has also left us with many wonderful memories. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Taylor Melson and brother David Mcalhaney and sisters Nancy Zook and Virginia Robison. We will remember her often and missed her very much. Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Millie Matthews (husband Bill), Mary Jane Reed (husband Ed), Margaret Short and Toni Whitehead (husband Rod) all of Indianapolis and her son, Gerry Melson (wife Carrie) of Brooklyn, IN. She is survived by 9 grandchildren, Scott, Christina, Brad, Mike, Dillon, Jazz, Julie, Alexis, and Zach ; and 6 great-grandchildren. Dorothy's sister, Mary Totton of Indianapolis also survives. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Flanner and Buchanan Floral Park- 425 N. Holt Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46222. Visitation will be from 7:00 until 9:00 pm, Monday, August 27 at the funeral home. You are invited to go to the Guest Book page to pass along your personal message or tell a story.
