Dorothy E. Childs

Dorothy “Dottie” E. Childs, 86, of Indianapolis/Greenwood, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026 surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with dementia.

Dottie was born March 2, 1940, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She grew up in Stringtown, a historic neighborhood on the near westside of Indianapolis. She lived a life defined by warmth, strength, perseverance and an unwavering love for her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who enjoyed gardening, especially all her flowers, music and dancing. She found her freedom in the melody and her joy in the dance. An avid golfer, she loved the game and was a well-deserved “Club Champion.” She was an animal lover who dearly cherished her yorkie pups.

Dottie is survived by her daughters, Tracy Chapman, Carolyn Hogan (husband Pat), sons, Gary Chapman (wife Rae), Gordon Chapman (wife Lisa), grandchildren, Haley Ketchum, Broden Chapman, Matthew Chapman, Nathan Chapman, Brandon Perkins, Chad McCord, Josh Ellis, Nick Ellis and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Dan Montgomery. We all will forever cherish her memory.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald G. Childs, son Ralph (Buddy) Ellis, parents William and Margaret Montgomery, sister Sharon Campbell, brothers Donald Montgomery, William (Bill) Montgomery, Richard (Dick) Montgomery, James (Jim) Montgomery, Robert (Bob) Nevins.

All services will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at the Flanner Buchanan Mortuary – Floral Park, located at 425 Holt Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46222. Visitation will be from Noon to 2pm, service to follow. Burial will be at Floral Park Cemetery.
