Dorothy Ann Brown

October 28, 1928 — October 6, 2016

Dorothy Ann Brown, 87, Indianapolis, joined theCelestial Choir on October 6, 2016. She was not really a singer, but we’repretty sure she’s swaying to the music. She was born in Bloomington, IN to thelate William Francis and Sarah Ann (Sheetz) Van Hoy on October 28, 1928. Shewas also preceded in death by her brothers, Kenneth Eugene Van Hoy, WilliamFrancis Van Hoy, Jr., Charles Larry Van Hoy, and Donald Vincent Van Hoy.Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Eugene C. Brown, children, Martin(Katherine) Klausmeier-Brown, Marianne (Richard) Mize, and Ellen (Timothy)Robinson, grandchildren, Andrew and Meghan Brown, and Maren and Miles Robinson, sister, Sister Charles Van Hoy, S.P., and sisters-in-law, Judy Van Hoy, BettyVan Hoy, and Mary Van Hoy. Dorothy was an elementary school teacher for manyyears. Although she left her “official” teaching post in her 30s, she neverstopped teaching those around her. She was a fiercely independent woman whoalso loved her family deeply. She enjoyed reading, especially cookbooks, andtrying new recipes – but she did not want you in the kitchen while she wascooking! She earned a Master’s Degree, taught at IUPUI, learned flowerarranging as an employee of a local flower shop, and volunteered with manyorganizations including Madison King’s Daughters’ Hospital, as a docent for theIndianapolis Museum of Art and delivering food to shut-ins for St. Vincent DePaul. She was active in her church until she could no longer attend; she had astrong faith and felt God’s presence in her daily life. Dorothy especiallyloved to watch her grandchildren learn, grow and change. She taught us to keeplearning, keep trying new things and to be ourselves. There will be a mass andcelebration of Dorothy’s life at the end of the month. Friends and family willbe contacted with details. Memorial gifts may be directed to Smile Train,Wheeler Mission, and Gleaners Food Bank. Arrangements entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan–Broad Ripple.
