Doris Jeanette (Liechty) York, 91, of Plymouth, Minnesota, passed away peacefully after a long battle with dementia on September 25, 2025. Doris was born on May 18, 1934, to the late Paul Sylvester and Olive Gertrude (Burns) Liechty in Brazil, Indiana.
Doris graduated from Brazil High School in 1952 and went on to Indiana Central College (now the University of Indianapolis), where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and met her future husband, having memorable dates as they ushered at musicals. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from IUPUI. Over the years, Doris taught school in Brazil, Indiana, Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Indianapolis, Indiana, taking a break to raise her family.
Doris married her college sweetheart, William James “Bill” York, in 1955, and they celebrated 58 years of marriage before his death in 2013. They resided primarily in Indianapolis, where they raised their four children. She enjoyed being a homemaker and was active in her children’s PTA, even serving as President. Doris could often be heard playing piano, whether for pleasure or to accompany church services, and sang soprano with the church choir. She was known for having a song for any situation and especially enjoyed singing hymns. God was always at the center of her life. One trip she especially treasured was her trip with Bill to Jordan and Israel to visit Biblical sites. She was also known for her beautiful flower gardens and spent her evenings tending them. She enjoyed assembling quilts for the homeless and, with Bill, loved volunteering for Indianapolis’ Crisis Pregnancy Center.
After Bill passed away, Doris moved to Minneapolis to live with her daughter, Erin. There she found her new home with the Northwest Church of Christ and cherished every moment spent with her new church family. Most of all, she (and Doris’ family) appreciated all of the support they gave her through the last 12 years of her life. Doris’s other family members would like to express our gratitude to Erin for lovingly caring for her mother throughout Doris’s long and difficult journey with dementia.
Doris was preceded in death by her loving husband Bill, her beloved son Eric York, and four great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Virginia Arlene Meyers (Ward) of Brazil, Indiana; son Kevin York (Veronica) of Tuscola, Texas; daughter-in-law Teresa York of Coatesville, Indiana; daughters Lynnette Dallas (Jimmie) of Anderson, Indiana and Erin Ringle (Mike) of Plymouth, Minnesota; 23 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren (and one on the way!) as well as a host of nieces, nephews and many cherished friends and family members.
Services will be held at Flanner Buchanan - Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd, West Drive in Indianapolis on Saturday, October 11 at noon, with burial to follow. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until noon, with a private family viewing from 10:30 am to 11:00 am. Doris’ dear friend Evangelist Rick Lanning of Northwest Church of Christ will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Northwest Church of Christ, 8624 50th Avenue North, New Hope, MN 55428, where Doris was a member, and to Life Centers of Indiana, 9511 Angola Court, Suite 215, Indianapolis, Indiana 46268, where she and Bill volunteered.
