We are celebrating the vibrant life of Doris Ann Wainwright Votava, a devoted, candid and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was born on September 15, 1925 to Clyde and Lola Wainwright. Doris Votava died on
March 29, 2012 after a short illness.
Shortly after graduating from Morgantown High School in 1943, Doris married Clarence "Bud" Votava on October 5, 1946. They met in Baltimore, Maryland and soon moved to Kokomo, Indiana, where they raised their daughters, Ruth Ellen and Phyllis Joan. In Kokomo, Doris was very active and involved with the First Christian Church, the Home Demonstration Club and the 4-H Club. She was a Red Cross volunteer for 30 years and served on the board that developed and built the Friendship Home for Girls.
After 40 years enjoying and thriving in the Kokomo community, Bud and Doris were among the first residents of Robin Run Village in Indianapolis. Doris' passion for helping other moved along with her. While in Indianapolis, she continued her volunteer work, this time at the Humana Women's Hospital and the Indianapolis Women's Hospital. Both Doris and Bud were also faithful members of the Zionsville Christian Church.
Doris was a talented woman. She shared her love through the food she served her family, the gardens she tended-to diligently and the stories she'd so eagerly tell. She delivered jokes that made her friends and family blush. She embraced life—lived aggressively yet compassionately—and she raised her children and grandchildren to do the same.
Doris left a legacy that lives on in the hearts, minds and lives of her husband, Bud; her children, Ruth Ellen Brown and Phyllis Joan Best; her grandchildren Heather Brown Brownell, Andrew Brown, Robert O. Farber and Ann Wainwright Werbach; and her great grandchildren, Blaine and Davis Brownell.
Doris Ann Wainwright Votava will be sorely, desperately missed. She loved, and was loved by many. She lived a full life—one that she eagerly shared with her family and friends through her words, actions and love.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Doris' honor to the Zionsville Christian Church, 120 N. 9th Street, Zionsville, Indiana 46077 or the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis, 441 E. 10th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202 or the Saint Vincent Foundation Caring Angel Program, 8402 Harcourt Road, Suite 210, Indianapolis, Indiana 44260.
Funeral will be on Saturday March 31st, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Flanner-Buchanan in Zionsville. Visitation will be 12:00-1:00 PM. There will be a committal service in Kokomo on Monday April 2,2012 at Sunset Memorial Gardens at 11:00.
