Heaven opened its gates to an angel this passed Friday, the 2nd of September. Dorice JoAnn (Smith) Phillips was born on May 9th, 1933 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents Warren and Marguerite (Schnell) Smith, her brother Leonard “Laddy” Smith, her husband of 40 years, Richard Phillips and her beloved son, Mark Phillips.
Dorice loved the Lord her God and was a longtime member of Faith United Methodist Church. She spent her final days surrounded by her family and friends as they relived memories and stories of the past, read scriptures to her from the Bible and sang beautiful hymns.
Dorice loved her children immensely and felt very blessed to have been called their mother. She leaves behind her son, Dan Phillips and wife Kathie; Daughter-in-law, Yvonne Phillips, (wife of Mark); Daughter, Kay Morris; and son, Scott Phillips and his wife Holly.
Dorice otherwise known as Mamu was our Mamu for nearly 38 years. She was present at the very first birth and continued loving each of her grandchildren over the years the very same way. She continued to pass this love onto her great-grandchildren over the last decade and a half. She will forever be missed by Sara “Ya-Ya” Spencer and her husband Tommy and son’s – Thomas, Noah and Jake; Emily Turner and her husband Bill; Jennifer Smallman and her husband Chad and son’s – Tyler and Caleb; Ashlie Brewer and her husband Daniel and children – Delanie, Elysa and Calvin; Heide Inman and her husband Sam and son’s – Conner, Asher and Jaxon; Trey Peek and his wife Sarah and their soon to be baby whom Mamu was so very excited about; Dani Phillips; Andrew Phillips; and Dylan Phillips.
Dorice was a friend to all, but some were more than just friends, they were family. She leaves behind her sister from another mother, Barb Stokes, whom she spent 65 wonderful years with. The Stokes Family along with the Stites Family were and will always be more than friends, they are family.
