Donald V. Freeman Jr., 84, of Indianapolis passed away September 2, 2016 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born November 18, 1931 in Abington, Pennsylvania to the late Donald V. and Marie (Gregson) Freeman. Don grew up in Bryn Athyn and Warminster Pennsylvania, and after graduating from high school was drafted into the Army where he served in the Korean War. Once discharged from the army, Don attended and graduated from Temple in Philadelphia in 1954 with a degree in engineering. He worked in the mechanical contracting field for many years and owned his own company, Freeman Mechanical. He finished his career working at Fuller Engineering in sales in Indianapolis where he later became an owner of the company. Don was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Christiana Love (Zerbe) Freeman in 2001.
Don loved cars and airplanes and spent much of his free time building them. He restored several Porsche’s including a Porsche RS ‘60 Spyder and a ’55 Porsche Coupe. Don built a Bowers Fly Baby Biplane in his garage. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and took flying lessons. He also was a member of the Porsche Club of America where he raced in several autocrosses. Don spent much of his retired time building and flying remote control airplanes. He was a member of the Indianapolis Flying Club and was regarded a Master Model Builder as the construction and detail of his RC planes were like no other. Don was a Christian with a strong faith and was a member of the Christian Men’s Business Connection (CBMC). His optimism, sense of humor and cheerful outlook will be greatly missed.
Don is survived by his wife of 13 years, Darlene, sons Michael (Judy), and Jeffrey (Heather) and daughter Christy Lynch (Jim), his stepsons, Jim Burton Jr., Craig L. Burton (Kimberly), his grandchildren Patrick and Katherine Lynch, Lucy Jane, Adeline and Leo Burton, and his beloved dog, Ladybug.
Many thanks go to the VA Hospital, as well as the Kindred at Home Hospice for their wonderful care. Don’s Hospice Nurse, Kristen Taylor, provided excellent and loving care during his hardest days.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 6, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 with Services immediately following at Flanner and Buchanan – Carmel located at 325 East Carmel Drive, Carmel, IN. Burial will follow at Eagle Creek Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Kindred at Home Hospice.
