Donald Chester Raines, age 99, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2026 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Mr. Raines was born on February 16 1927 in Calhoun, Georgia, the son of the late Myrtle Barrett Raines and Gus Franklin Raines, also to a deceased brother, Warner Raines and sister, Frances Raines. The family moved to Rome, Georgia in 1929, and Mr. Raines attended Tubize (Celanese) grammar school and Rome Boys High School, graduating in 1944.
He served in the United States Army from April, 1945 until October, 1946 as a Technician Fourth Grade Medical Detachment. He married Frances Gertrude Goss on March 31, 1948, and graduated from the Southern College of Pharmacy (now part of Mercer University) in 1949.
He worked in drug stores during high school and through college and then went with Eli Lilly and Company, working in sales and management in Kentucky, South Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania and Indiana. He worked for the company 40 years and retired on January 1, 1990, Mr. Raines loved pharmacy and was considered an unofficial "Doc" to his family and friends because of his knowledge.
Mr. Raines was a faithful member of a Baptist Church wherever he lived and served many years as a beloved Sunday School teacher, deacon and financial officer. His favorite pastime was following the stock market. He shared a love of music, the theater, and travel with his wife, Frances and was a devoted and much-loved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He is survived by daughter, Laura Raines Yaramishyn (husband, Gregory J. Yaramishyn,) and Beth Raines; granddaughters, Sarah E. Nolin and Frances J. Yaramishyn, and a great-granddaugher, Sydney Nolin and great grandson, James Nolin.
