Donald Joseph Schreiner

Donald Joseph Schreiner passed away August 6, 2022, at the age of 89, six months after losing his wife of sixty years, Kathleen (Craig) Schreiner. Donald was born in Shelbyville, IN on May 1, 1933, one of nine children born to John Edward Schreiner and Ruth Frances Mabee.

Donald worked briefly for Allison Transmission before entering the army in 1953 where he trained as a Morse Code operator and served in the Signal Corps in Germany. He then attended General Motors Institute, graduating in 1959. He began a forty-year career as a material applications engineer and metallurgist with Allison Transmission/Rolls Royce. After retirement, he continued as a consultant for a number of years, officially retiring after 61 years. He took great pride in having been an integral part of the team that designed and tested the fuel tanks that powered the Apollo 11 mission, putting the first man on the moon. He was also an Eagle Scout.

Donald met his beloved Kathleen at Butler University and they married July 7, 1962 at Irvington Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis. The devoted couple shared a deep Christian faith and great love of country. Together they enjoyed lakefront living, fishing, bird watching, travel, horseback riding, collecting antiques and, for a number of years, raising and showing Arabian horses.

Donald is survived by his children: Jeanette M. Vanausdall, Joseph R. Schreiner (LeAnn), Michael C. Schreiner and Donna K. Pauley (Ben), six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, former son-in-law John Vanausdall, sister Joan Tebbe (Dennis) and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Flanner Buchanan Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite), 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis on Saturday, September 24 at 4:00 p.m., with the visitation from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Online condolences may be shared at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
