Don was born in Eastchester, NY on January 14th, 1944. He passed away on January 9th, 2026; just 5 days before his 82nd birthday.
He was a loving husband and trusted partner to his wife of 22 years (Sandra Tunis), and devoted father to his children (Joseph Hay and Sarah Gurstelle), and his stepchildren (Jacob Holub, Shoshanna Bruesewitz, John A. McArdle). He also adored his six grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his parents (Sidney and Diana Hay), by his sister (Cynthia Seegull), and by his former wife (Linda Hay).
Don was a resolute psychiatrist. He published many scientific articles, gave hundreds of clinical presentations, and co-edited a book on Agitation in Dementia. He was a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Don’s patients were especially important to him, and he gave his all in treating every one of them with compassion and warmth. He was a respected clinician, mentor, colleague, and friend.
Don enjoyed reminiscing about his five years in Montana as a member of the Public Health Service, and about his attendance at the Woodstock Music Festival in 1969. He also enjoyed listening to music, particularly jazz trumpet. Of course, he also loved playing his own trumpet. Taking ballroom dancing lessons with Sandra was a special source of joy.
Don did not hold back on his love, support, or kindness. He will be remembered as a man of the highest character, and a man who loved to laugh and have fun. He will be missed by family, friends, colleagues, and everyone with the good fortune to know Don.
If you wish to make a charitable donation in honor of Don, please consider the Alzheimer’s Association.
