Donald J.H. Engerer

Donald J.H. Engerer, peacefully passed away on Monday, August 25, 2025. Donald was born in Buffalo, New York on February 4, 1930, to Edwin and Henrietta (Hemmeter) Engerer, he was one of five siblings.

He graduated high school at Bellevue High School in Bellevue, Pennsylvania in the class of 1948, after high school he received his bachelor’s degree of Science in Civil Engineering, Valparaiso University in 1953. He enlisted in the army and was part of the army signal corps in the Korean war. When he came home, he married the love of his life Alice (Johnson) Engerer on September 1, 1956, and they resided in Chicago Illinois. In the following years, God blessed them with their son Matt and daughter Dawn.

He relocated his family to the Cumberland area in 1975, where he was involved in his children’s sports and coaching his son’s teams. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers, his favorite team. He enjoyed camping and spending time with his family in Northern Michigan. For over 35 years, he thoroughly enjoyed participating in the town of Cumberland from town engineer, to being part of the city council, other board memberships and the Neighborhood Association.

He retired from the state of Indiana utilities regulatory commission on June 6, 2003, after 24 years of service and in his later years he enjoyed quietly sitting on his front porch where he was perfectly content to watch the world pass by.

Donald is survived by a son Matt Engerer and daughter Dawn Ragsdale, his grandson, Elijah Ragsdale and his granddaughters Abigail and Hannah Engerer.

Donald was proceeded in death by his parents, his loving wife, and his siblings Edwin Lois, Ann and Elaine.

A visitation 10-12pm will be held at Trinity church on Saturday, September 6 with the funeral service to follow at 12pm. He will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery with Military Honors after the service.
