Donald Dean Cantrell Sr.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Donald D. Cantrell, who left us on August 26, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on December 20, 1938, in Gallipolis, Ohio, Donald was a warm-hearted soul, whose life was a testament to dedication, love, and service. 

Donald was the beloved son of Joseph Herman Cantrell and Garnett Marie Grizzel. Donald leaves behind a large and loving family, including his daughters, Debra A. Cantrell (deceased), Tonita S. Peart, Helen M. McWhorter, and Bernadette Cantrell (deceased); and sons, Donald D. Cantrell Jr. (deceased), Jeffrey A. Cantrell and Todd M. Cantrell. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, James A. Daye, Joseph L. Daye, Christopher D. Peart, Chase A. McWhorter, Autum R. Meeds, Saane C. McWhorter, Mary E. Cantrell, Mathew C. Cantrell, Timothy C. Cantrell, Nathan D. Cantrell, Amanda N. Bice, and Dustin A. Cantrell, as well as 18 great-grandchildren. 

In 1959, Donald married Bethal Ann Evans, and together they raised five wonderful children during their 30 years of marriage. Later, he found love again with Bonnie L. Carothers, whom he married in 1997. They shared 22 blissful years together until her passing in 2019. 

A proud veteran, Donald served his country in the United States Army in Germany for four years during part of the Vietnam War, working in the Motor Pool as a mechanic and achieving the rank of SP4 before his honorable discharge in 1964. His service exemplified his sense of duty and responsibility, qualities that defined his entire life. 

Professionally, Donald dedicated himself to his work as a coin-operated machine electronics technician, a career he excelled in until his retirement in 1998. He was also an active member of the American Legion, where he found camaraderie and purpose among fellow veterans. 

Beyond his professional and military achievements, Donald had a passion for the arts and the simple joys of life. He enjoyed sketching and painting, found peace in gardening, and delighted in home improvement projects. His love for animals brought him great joy, and he cherished the time spent with his pets. 

Donald was known for his caring nature, quick wit, and remarkable sense of responsibility. He was a beacon of light to those around him, often sharing a joke to lighten the mood or offering a helping hand to those in need. 

In accordance with his wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Donald's life. 

Donald D. Cantrell's life was a rich tapestry of love, service, and laughter. His memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
