Don J Kay, a beloved figure in the world of motorsports broadcasting, passed away on December 11, 2024, at the age of 85. He was born on October 14, 1939, in Cook County, Illinois, and later grew up in Lombard, Illinois. Don’s passion for sports began early in life, leading him to graduate from Wayland Academy in Wisconsin. He was not only a talented speed skater but also a skilled football player, contributing to his high school team’s state championship victory in 1958.
Don’s career spanned more than three decades as the host of the Auto Sports Radio Show. Don loved the program and spent hours planning and securing interviews. Over the years he made many friends among the drivers and owners.
He is survived by his partner of 37 years, Sharon Bates; his son, Bob Kay; his daughter, Shannon Bartley; bonus daughters, Kim, Emily, Dawn, Mary and Beth. As well as his siblings, Dennis Kay and Jean Kay. Additionally, Don leaves behind a loving family that includes 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, who will cherish his memory.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Fred and Thelma, along with his second mom Polly; his daughter Bridget; his brother Fred Kay Jr.; and his sister Ann. Each of these individuals played a significant role in his life, and their memories will forever be intertwined with his.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Don's life will be held on May 24, 2025, at McGilverys Pub & Eatery in Indianapolis, Indiana. The gathering will be held from 10:00 am to 2:00pm, with a memorial service beginning at Noon. The family invites all who knew and loved Don to join them in honoring his legacy and sharing stories of the joyful moments they experienced together.
