Dolores F. Cikrit, MD, FACS, died unexpectedly on March 23, 2015 while on vacation with her family in Marathon Key, Florida.
Dolores is survived by her husband Joseph Schmit and her daughters Sara Cikrit Schmit and Anna Cikrit Schmit. She was preceded by her parents James and Florence Cikrit.
Dolores was born March 7, 1954, in Havre, Montana, grew up in Big Sandy, Montana, and was a graduate of Carroll College, Helena, Montana. She then attended medical school at the University of Colorado, Denver. After medical school she completed a surgery residency with the IU School of Medicine and a vascular fellowship at the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia, Missouri, where she met her husband. At the time of her death, Dolores was a Professor of Surgery with the IU School of Medicine, and the Chief of Surgical Services at the Roudebush VA Medical Center. She was also a partner of the Division of University Vascular Surgery, Indiana School of Medicine.
Dolores was a devoted wife and mother and was deeply admired and respected by a generation of residents and students for her passion in teaching vascular surgery. She will be greatly missed by all in surgery at the VA Medical Center, University Vascular Surgery, IU School of Medicine, and IU Health Methodist. She enjoyed spending free time with her family outdoors at Eagle Creek Park and watching her daughters' favorite movies on Saturday nights. She enjoyed reading, travelling and took trips throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. Dolores will always be fondly remembered by her family, friends, colleagues, students and all who knew her.
Calling will be April 8 from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Flanner Buchanan- Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd., West Drive, Indianapolis, IN. A memorial service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on April 9 at Saint Monica's Catholic Church, 6131 Michigan Road, Indianapolis, IN, with visitation starting at 6:00 p.m. A funeral service and burial will take place July 7 in Big Sandy, Montana.
