Dick Yuan-kai Chang

April 10, 1936 — April 16, 2024

Dick was born in Nanjing, China on April 10, 1936. His parents were JiFu Chang and Difeng Wu. He came to the United States in 1955 to attend Missouri Valley College, and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri in 1962. He became a naturalized citizen in 1971. He worked as an engineer for United Technologies, Carrier Division from 1974-1999 retiring after over 25 years of service. He holds at least 4 patents in heating and cooling design where he was the primary inventor.

Dick was an avid traveler visiting over 50 countries in his lifetime. He loved taking and sharing the photographs of the many beautiful places he visited. Dick was also a lifelong tennis player. His USTA team qualified for the National Championship tournament in the 1980s, he remained an active player at West Indy Racquet Club until the age of 87 and held dear his friendships with his many tennis mates. He enjoyed spending time with family, solving his daily puzzles, and studying the geopolitical news from his native China. He remained healthy, active, and sharp to the very end of his life.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents and 5 siblings.

He is survived by his daughter, Amy Chang Hinshaw; his son, Jeffrey Chang; his son-in-law, James Hinshaw; 3 grandchildren, Matthew Hinshaw, Laura Hinshaw, and Rachael Hinshaw. He is also survived by 1 brother, many nieces and nephews, and his ex-wife, Valerie Chang.
