Dewey Felix Lockwood, 94, of Carmel passed away on February 17, 2014, at Manor Care at Summer Trace. Born May 16, 1919, in Keyport, Monmouth County, NJ, he was the son of the late William Henry Lockwood II and Clara (Eitner) Lockwood. Dewey spent the first four decades of his life in New Jersey where he graduated from Bridgeton High School at age 16. By 1938, he was employed by Mack Trucks in New Brunswick, NJ. On New Year's Eve 1938, he met Mary Marie Wickward at a skating rink in Rainbow Lake, NJ. They married on October 14, 1940, in Pitman, NJ. In 1944, Dewey enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served honorably until 1946. During World War II he was stationed as a Fireman 1st Class at the U.S. Naval Base on Trinidad. After the war, Dewey returned to work for Mack Trucks where he built transmissions. He worked his way up from assemblyman to general foreman and retired in 1977 after a career of 40 years with the venerable truck manufacturer. Dewey's work with Mack took him, Marie, and their children to Hagerstown, MD in 1961 when the company moved. While living in New Jersey, Dewey served as a volunteer fireman with the Franklin Park Fire Department. In Hagerstown from 1961 to 1998, he volunteered with the Red Cross to conduct blood drives and served on the Council of Hagerstown Presbyterian Church. In 1998, he and Marie moved to Carmel where he served on the Waterwood Neighborhood Association. After moving to Summer Trace, he served on its Residence Advisory Council. Dewey had many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was an accomplished woodworker, giving many of his skillfully constructed lamps, shelves, cedar chests, and other pieces to family and friends. He also enjoyed bowling in leagues for many years. He avidly followed politics and the economy and held strong opinions about both. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Marie of Carmel, his daughter Carol Dahoney (Richard) of Carmel, his son Dewey Felix Lockwood Jr. (Sandi) of The Woodlands, TX; granddaughters Maryellen Dahoney Spicer (Steven) of St. Charles, IL; Erica Dahoney Harriman (Kevin) of Carmel; Elizabeth Dahoney Kuechler (Joshua) of Greenwood, IN; grandson Dewey Felix Lockwood III (Tammi) of Spring, TX; and great grandchildren Luke and Hannah Spicer; Annie and Charlie Harriman; and Ryker, Joshua Jr., and Vanessa Kuechler. Dewey is also survived by one niece and seven nephews, and many extended family and friends. Dewey was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William Henry Lockwood III and sister Ruth Lockwood Vinziniski. Funeral services will be held at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 3650 West 106th Street, Carmel, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22. Burial will follow at Washington Park North Cemetery, Indianapolis. The family will receive visitors at the church between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. preceding the funeral services. Flanner and Buchanan - Carmel, is handling funeral arrangements. Memorial Contributions may be made to Pilgrim Lutheran Church.
