Dennis Hillemeyer, 62, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on July 21, 2022 at his home.
He was born on May 20, 1960 in Indianapolis, to Walter and Mary Hillemeyer. Dennis and his parents and siblings moved to California where he became an adult. Having visited his grandmother in Indianapolis in his youth, Dennis decided to return about 25 years ago.
Indianapolis was a place where he had many happy memories. Dennis lived in downtown Indianapolis, including an apartment developed by the Riley Area Development Corporation. He wanted to be near Lockerbie Square where he worked largely helping plant and maintain gardens and worked on other housing related projects. Dennis had a strong work ethic and a deep loyalty to his customers.
Dennis established strong and trusting relationships with many people whose path he crossed. He was well known and appreciated by many in downtown Indianapolis, including grocery store clerks, waitresses at his favorite restaurant, rental property managers, case workers, neighbors and their children, and more. Dennis was kind, generous and always interested in the other person. He had great empathy and helped those that he could. He thought little of his own needs and required only the basics – a good place to live, simple food on the table and a good cup of coffee. He was a responsible and good man.
He is survived by many friends and neighbors in Lockerbie Square. Doug Pond, Bob Hendren, Patsy and Bob Cram, Terry and Carolyn Bradbury, Dana Bradbury, Meghan Bradbury, Bill Gray, Cat Banquis, Susan Powers, Deborah McCarty and Amber McCarty are among those who have had the pleasure and privilege of knowing Dennis over the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and Fred and Doris Conrad who were the first to welcome him to the neighborhood.
Dennis’s graveside service will be Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 10:00 AM with burial to follow in Washington Park East Cemetery.
