Dermetta Roseborough Jones, affectionately known as “Met,” was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on September 23, 1939. She was the sixth of seven children born to the late John and Beulah MacMillan Roseborough. She married Oscar Calvin Jones on June 19, 1965. To this union, three sons were born: Michael (August 1, 1966), and twins Gregory and Jeffrey (December 16, 1973). Jeffrey passed away shortly after birth.

Dermetta was an honorary graduate of Atkins High School and Winston Salem State University, both in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  She pledged the Gamma Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. while at Winston-Salem State University. She did graduate work at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. She worked as a public school teacher for five years in North Carolina and two years in Baltimore, Maryland. From 1967 through September 1995, she was employed by the Social Security Administration in Maryland and Indianapolis, where she received numerous awards and certificates for outstanding service.

Dermetta belonged to several social, religious, and service organizations. She joined Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at an early age and remained a member until she moved with her husband, Oscar, to Baltimore, Maryland. While there, she was a member of Douglas Memorial Community Church. Shortly after moving to Indianapolis, she joined University United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Indianapolis Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Inc., the Quettes, and did volunteer work with Oasis. Dermetta and Oscar frequently enjoyed their monthly bid whist card club gatherings, where multiple longtime friends would meet and fellowship with each other,

Dermetta departed this earthly life on September 28th, 2023. She will be missed by those who knew her. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. She leaves to rejoin her husband Oscar and her memory will be cherished by her two sons (Gregory in Indianapolis and Michael in Philadelphia; her daughter-in-law Serena and grandson Evan Oscar (Michael’s wife and son); Vera Roseborough and Dorothy Hunter, her sisters, both in Winston-Salem; Zelma Roseborough (wife to Dermetta’s late brother Haywood Roseborough); and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
