David Wayne Gillette passed away peacefully on January 15th, 2023, at his home in Carmel, IN. He was 83. David was born in Indianapolis on March 24th, 1939, to Wayne and Marie Gillette. He grew up in Ravenswood and attended Broad Ripple High School. David was inducted into the Marines and served for several years.
He married Nancy Davis in 1961 and in 1962 had twin daughters, Diane and Denise. He married Wendy Thornton Gillette in 1977 and was devoted to her for 45 years. They enjoyed travel, music, walking, cooking and time together.
David worked for several years as an electrician with his father. Then after receiving his teaching degree, taught English at Lincoln Middle School in Pike Township. He later worked for Amtrak as an electrician and retired from that company after a long career. He had three degrees from Indiana University. David then taught English and Business writing at several universities including IUPUI, Ivy Tech, and the University of Indianapolis.
David was witty and enjoyed telling stories. He and his wife played scrabble daily and did crossword puzzles. David was an avid reader who collected art. David loved his cats, Miss Princess and Miss Torti, who will miss him very much.
Survivors include his wife, Wendy Thornton Gillette; his daughters, Diane (Larry) Doss and Denise Gillette; his sister, Peggy Hansen; his mother-in-law, Beverly Thornton; his sister-in-law, Terri Hammerschmitt; niece, Rachel and nephew, Matthew.
David will be cremated, with Flanner Buchanan – Carmel overseeing the arrangements. David did not want a service or viewing. In lieu of contributions, they can be made in his memory to the Indianapolis Humane Society or the American Heart Association.
