David J. Sosinsky

November 29, 1957 — February 15, 2026

Carmel, IN

David “Dave” Sosinsky of Carmel, Indiana, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 15, 2026, at the age of 68. He was born on November 29, 1957, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to John and Mary Sosinsky. He was a proud older brother to his sister, Michelle Sosinsky.

As a young man, Dave attended the University of Toronto, where he met the love of his life, Kim Engberg. Jokingly referring to himself as a “forever student,” Dave spent 13 years there earning his Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering Science, his Master of Applied Science, and ultimately his Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering. He often said he would have happily stayed in school forever.

In 1981, during one of his many university adventures, Dave approached Kim with a smile and handed her a balloon before heading off to a local pub. Kim laughed with her friends, wondering how bold he was to hand her a balloon that may have been intended for someone else. She kept it anyway. By fate, they crossed paths again. Dave and Kim began dating on September 18th of that year, became engaged on November 18th two years later, and were married on May 18th, 1985, surrounded by family and friends. Dave liked to say he could never forget their anniversary, everything important happened on the 18th.

Dave had an adventurous spirit. He and Kim especially loved traveling to France, exploring vineyards and enjoying the cuisine. His work took him throughout Western and Northern Europe, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and Argentina. Along the way, he collected both red and white wines and carefully recorded them in his collection book.

In 1986, Dave and Kim moved from Toronto to Columbia, Maryland, filled with dreams and optimism. They soon purchased their dream home in Ellicott City. Recognizing that self-employment did not lend itself to the family life he wanted, Dave changed paths and moved his family to Beaumont, Texas. Two years later, they relocated to Whitestown, Indiana, where they welcomed their first child, Evan Christian Sosinsky, in July 2001, followed 15 months later by twins, Noah David Sosinsky and Brooklyn Kelley Sosinsky. The family eventually settled in Carmel, Indiana.

Dave made it his life’s mission to be a devoted husband and father. He ensured his children felt loved, supported, and encouraged every day.

A proud Canadian, Dave was an avid sports fan, especially of hockey and lacrosse. He remained a lifelong supporter of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Team Canada. His love of hockey became a family passion. His sons played, and his daughter rarely missed a game by his side. From early-morning mini-mite practices to late-night college games, Dave never missed a moment. Even after his sons hung up their skates, he found his way back to the rink.

Dave worked for 25 years at Nucor Steel in its Castrip and Metallurgy departments, where he was passionate about mentoring young metallurgists. In 2009, he received a Certificate of Recognition from the Association for Iron and Steel Technology. He held 21 patents advancing steel technology. In 1989, he was awarded the prestigious Chipman Award in recognition of his contributions to the mineral industry. He was a longtime member of the Iron and Steel Society.

Dave is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Kim, and his children, Evan, Noah, and Brooklyn. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Sosinsky, and his sister, Michelle Sosinsky.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dave’s honor may be made to the Indiana Youth Hockey League Association.
