David R. Hurd

February 15, 1942 — July 26, 2016

David Hurd was born in Longtown, Ohio to Theophilus and Gladys Hurd on February 15th, 1942. He attended Liberty, a one-room schoolhouse in Longtown, Ohio from 1947 to 1951. From there, he transferred to Palestine School in 1952, and in 1955 he started Westmont High School in Hollansburg, Ohio, graduating in 1959. He obtained a Degree of Bachelors of Science from Central State University, in Wilberforce, Ohio, in 1963, after which he served in the United States Army.

In 1966 he married Barbara E. Perkins. David and Barbara were blessed with a beautiful family, Monica (Randall) Johnson of Indianapolis, Indiana, Valerie Washington of Fort Worth, Texas, Patrick (Sabrina) Hurd of Agoura Hills, California, and Joseph Washington of Kokomo, Indiana. They were also blessed to have four grandchildren: Alexandria, Ashlynn, Lourdes, and Jaslyn.

His grandson, Joshua Randall Johnson; his brother, Donald Hurd; and his mother, Gladys and father, Theophilus Hurd, preceded him in death.

He is survived by three sisters; Elizabeth Olinger, Edith (Joseph) Perkins, and Gloria (Terry) Buckingham, and four brothers; Richard, Dean (Mary), Ralph (Ann), and Frank Hurd, as well as many nieces and nephews.

David worked at Alcoa in Richmond, Indiana for 4 years, and for the Chrysler Corporation in Indianapolis, Indiana, Belvedere, Illinois, Detroit, Michigan, and Kokomo, Indiana for 20 years. In 1959 & 1970 he was the Treasurer for the National Association for Accountants, Indiana East Chapter.

He retired early in life and enjoyed designing and building furniture out of a variety of beautiful wood. He also enjoyed his work as a woodcrafts master and a handyman, which allowed him to aid his neighbors and any others in need of his help.
