David Barry Ogden

David Barry Ogden, age 80, passed away peacefully with his family by his bedside on January 17, 2026, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born on October 16, 1945, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Richard and Isabel Ogden, both of whom preceded him in death.

David spent his formative years in Millington, Tennessee, where he developed a lifelong love of the outdoors and a deep appreciation for history and learning. He went on to attend Auburn University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, a foundation that launched a distinguished professional career.

Following college, David moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he began work at Allison General Motors. He later continued his career with Rolls-Royce, where he worked for more than 30 years as a senior test engineer, before retiring in 2008. Known for his integrity, dedication, and quiet leadership, David took pride in his work and the relationships he built over decades of service.

In August of 1970, David married the love of his life, Sheila Joyce Ogden, with whom he shared over 55 years of marriage. Together, they built a home rooted in faith, love, and family. He is lovingly survived by Sheila and their three children: Johnathan Barry Ogden (wife Shannon Ogden), Amy Elizabeth Seltenright and Justin Robert Ogden. Grandfather to Kate and Claire Ogden, Connor and Carter Seltenright and Celeste Ogden. David was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his family was the great joy of his life.

He is also survived by his sister Peggy Fry (husband Steve Fry) and their sons Travis and Trent Fry and by his sister-in-law Carolyn Hutsen (husband Randy Hutsen) and her sons Courtney and Brandon Hutsen (wife Val Hutsen).

David was a true outdoorsman. He found peace hiking in the hills of the Smoky Mountains and at Eagle Creek Park, joy in tending his remarkable backyard garden, and time spent birdwatching. A passionate student of American history, he participated in the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon for decades, embracing the spirit of living history and community tradition which he enjoyed with his children and grandchildren.

He also loved baseball, coaching both of his sons’ teams and spending countless summer evenings with his family cheering on the Indianapolis Indians. Whether on the sidelines, in the garden, or around the dinner table, David’s presence was steady, kind, and encouraging.

Above all, David was a compassionate man of strong Christian faith. He served faithfully in his church throughout his life, including teaching Sunday School and served on numerous leadership committees, always ready to help wherever needed. His faith guided his life and shaped the love he shared with others.

David Barry Ogden will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous spirit, and unwavering devotion to family, faith, and community. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.
